Waldorf Salad

We love this traditional Waldorf Salad recipe made with crisp apples, grapes, celery and walnuts in a creamy dressing on Boston Bib lettuce.

I love to eat salads for lunch during the week, but this one is fancy enough for dinner with guests, served alongside Braised Short Ribs, Chicken and Rice or BBQ Chicken Drumsticks.

If a recipe has been around for more than 100 years, you know it’s worthy of your time! The traditional Waldorf Salad was created in the late 1800’s in New York City at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel and although there are some variations of it, it typically includes apples, celery, grapes and nuts in a mayonnaise based dressing.  It’s a classic recipe that works well as a side dish to any meal.

How to Make Waldorf Salad:

My take on Waldorf Salad includes golden raisins and I add a little more flavor to the dressing with a pinch of vinegar and sugar to balance out the mayonnaise flavor.
  • In a large bowl toss the apples in lemon juice. Add celery, grapes, raisins and walnuts.
  • In a separate bowl stir together the dressing ingredients: mayonnaise, sugar, red wine vinegar and pepper. Taste and adjust to your liking with a little extra mayonnaise or more vinegar.
  • Coat apple mixture in desired amount of dressing (you may not want to use it all).
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve cold, on top of bib lettuce or green lettuce leaf.

Additional Add-in Ideas:

Make the salad your own by adding carrots, berries, pecans or other nuts.
